WEP and SSID Configuration for Windows XP
Problem:
How do I configure WEP and SSID for Windows XP?
Solution:
NOTE: If you have both a Wireless card and an ethernet connection, the wireless device will take precedence over the network Cable connection. This can result in very slow transfer times if you are in a weak wireless pickup area. Disable the wireless device when you have a network cable plugged in to your ethernet card.
Windows XP Wireless network Configuration.
- Click on Start
- Click Control Panel.
- Click on Network and Internet Connections.
- Under the Pick a Control Panel Icon heading, click on Network
Connections.
- Right click on the Wireless Network Connection icon that corresponds to your wireless device
- Select Properties.
Click on the Wireless Networks Tab at the top of the window.
Check the box labeled: Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings. Click the Add button near the bottom of the window.
Click Here if you do not have a Wireless Networks tab. |
- In the Network Name: field, type in the SSID key you were given. The fall SSID is all upper case characters. No spaces.
- Remove the checkmark in the box labeled: The key is provided for me automatically.
- In the Network Key: field, type in the WEP key that you were given. It is either upper or lowercase. No spaces between characters.
- In the Confirm Network Key: field, type in the WEP key again.
- Click OK
- Close any open windows.
- Restart your computer.
- Click on Start
- Click on Shutdown
- Click on Restart.
If you do not have a wireless network tab...
- From Start menu click Settings > Control Panel.
- Then in the Control Panel window, double-click on the Administrative Tools > Services.
- Make sure that the Wireless Zero Configuration service is set to Started.
- Else double-click on the Wireless Zero Configuration and in the service properties window click Start button, and then click OK button.
- Then in the Network Connections window, right-click on the Wireless Network Connection icon and choose Properties again.
